Aπό το τέταρτο άλμπουμ του 1972, Foxtrot . Περιέχοντας επτά ενότητες, είναι το μεγαλύτερο τραγούδι του συγκροτήματος, γεμίζοντας σχεδόν ολόκληρη τη δεύτερη πλευρά της αρχικής κυκλοφορίας βινυλίου του άλμπουμ.
Ήταν ένα από τα αγαπημένα των θαυμαστών και έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως το «αδιαμφισβήτητο αριστούργημα της μπάντας», με τον πληκτρίστα Tony Banks να αναφέρεται σε μέρος του ως «πιθανώς η κορυφή μας».
Σε μια συνέντευξη του, ο Peter Gabriel συνόψισε το “Supper’s Ready” ως “ένα προσωπικό ταξίδι που καταλήγει να περπατά μέσα από σκηνές από την Αποκάλυψη στη Βίβλο… Θα το αφήσω έτσι” είπε. Αναφέρθηκε επίσης στο βιβλίο I Know What I Like του Armando Gallo να λέει ότι το τραγούδι επηρεάστηκε από μια εμπειρία που είχε η σύζυγός του από τον ύπνο σε ένα μωβ δωμάτιο και τους εφιάλτες που της έδινε.
Ερμήνευσαν το τραγούδι τακτικά στη σκηνή για αρκετά χρόνια στη συνέχεια. Οι ζωντανές εκδόσεις εμφανίζονται στα άλμπουμ Live at the Rainbow που ηχογραφήθηκε το 1973, Seconds Out που ηχογραφήθηκε το 1977, στη συλλογή Genesis Archive 1967–75 και στο box set Genesis Live 1973–2007 . Μια ανανεωμένη έκδοση εμφανίζεται επίσης στο άλμπουμ του Steve Hackett του 2012 Genesis Revisited II και στα συνοδευτικά ζωντανά άλμπουμ Genesis Revisited: Live at Hammersmith και Genesis Revisited: Live at Royal Albert Hall .
